Today when I tried to get Windows Live Essentials installed on my fresh installed x64 Windows 8 I got following error
You cannot download Windows Live programs unless you are connected to the internet.

When setting up Windows Live Essentials, the setup installer might fail with one of following error code.

Windows Live Writer 4 New Features
Windows Live Writer is the most popular blog client tool. Microsoft recently released Windows Live Writer 4 as part of new Windows Live Essentials Beta launch. I tried it and it looks great. Here is what’s new.
New Ribbon UI
Live Writer 4 has same Ribbon style menu as Office 2010. Actually this applies to other Windows Live wave 4 products, Live Mail, Photo Gallery etc.

Error 0x80070643 When Install Windows Live Essentials
When you try to install a Windows Live program, for example, Windows Live Messenger, the Windows Live Essentials installation fails with following error code 0x80070643. This issue occurs because a previous installation puts the computer in a state where a restart is pending.
To resolve this issue, restart the computer, and then reinstall Windows Live Essentials.
- Restart the computer
- Visit the following Windows Live Web site: http://explore.live.com
Or http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials-beta for - Click the Download button. When the file download dialog box pops up, click Run to start the Installation Wizard

Install Windows Live Messenger on 64bit Windows XP and Server 2003
Windows Live Messenger cannot be installed on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. It seems that these OS are blocked in Windows Live Messenger setup.
Eventually I found this blog Install Windows Live Messenger 2009 from .msi files. The instruction on this page works well on windows server 2003. It also works on other unsupported OS such as x64 windows XP and windows server 2008
